Dear Mr Willumsen
I fear you must have fancied I had forgotten my promise to send you these photographs of Candia, but probably you quite understand how busy we have all been in England preparing to repel the attack that Germany made unexpectedly on us and our allies.
Things are quieting down
now, we have withstood the first sudden shock and in a few weeks we shall be ready to attack them effectively.
I must not say any more as I do not know which side you sympathise with. Any how I feel quite sure that Denmark as a nation will never range itself among our enemies to fight against us.
Have you seen Prof. della Seta's (of Genova) Religione e arte figurata?
I have just got the English edition.
It is very much on my lines but
he deals more with the religious than with social influences, and he goes further – right down to the Renaissance. His remarks about the Byzantine style might interest you.
By the bye one of my correspondents who lives in Ravenna offered to send me some photos of the works of art there – are there any special ones you would like to have yourself?
If at any time I should be of any use to you here, I hope you will utilise me, and if you
come to London I should be very glad to see you.
With kind remembrances
Your sincerely
H.G. Spearing
If you have time I should be glad to have a Danish newspaper now & then to see what they say about the war, & what sort of news you get of it.
